Networks hope to maintain momentum from recent surge in TV ratings

A strong finish to the NASCAR season leaves the sport facing a new challenge in the year ahead: maintaining momentum. After losing one quarter of its TV audience between 2006 and 2010, ratings and viewership slides finally ended this season. Executives at ESPN, which aired the final 17 races of the season, hope to make additional gains by riding the drama of the championship battle between Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards.
