Fixing NASCAR: More personality, shorter races, bigger emphasis on winning keys to stopping ratings decline

What do a pothole and the Winter Olympics have in common? They rank as the two of the reasons that fans stopped watching NASCAR last year.

Or at least that?s what NASCAR and track officials would like fans to believe. Despite some of NASCAR?s best racing in years, many fans still tuned out during a season that started with a pothole that interrupted the Daytona 500 by more than two hours and competition from the Olympics games, which attracted attention away from a thrilling start to the season.

The root cause of the decline in TV ratings remains uncertain, but clearly fewer people are watching NASCAR on television.
